The Royal Transfer of Office

A 67-year tradition passes the crown to Saint Augustine's newest Royal Trio.

The Story

The Cathedral Basilica West Courtyard set a fitting stage for one of Saint Augustine's most enduring ceremonies — the Royal Transfer of Office, welcoming the incoming Royal Trio for 2026–2027.

Since 1959, the St Augustine Royal Family has honored the City of Saint Augustine's Spanish heritage by choosing three heritage natives to portray King Carlos II, Queen Marianna, and Princess Margarita Maria — the royal trio who reigned when the Castillo de San Marcos was decreed to be built in 1672. It isn't a pageant title. To be selected, each member must trace their lineage directly to early St Augustine — through the First Spanish Period (1565–1763), the British Period (1763–1784), or the Second Spanish Period (1784–1821). History, in other words, is a requirement.

The newly crowned court will carry that legacy forward, representing Saint Augustine at events throughout the year — across the City and beyond.

Sixty-seven years in, the tradition shows no sign of fading. If anything, it gets more meaningful with time.
